WRAPPING YOUR MIND AROUND THE “NEW YOU” AFTER WEIGHT LOSS

Hi ya Gorgeous,
Today I have a guest blog post for you as I am traveling for business. I am currently following the Weight Watchers online protocol for losing a few pounds I gained last holiday season and never lost! Now when I went to put on my convention season suit for some events, it was too tight! So I'm counting my points and seeing some results!

5 Common Things That Happen When
You Lose A Noticeable Amount Of Weight

Whenever someone chooses to commit to a weight loss journey, it’s not just a physical transformation that happens, but a mental transformation as well. Regardless of how long it takes for people to reach their goal weight, there are significant things that occur along the way that impact their body image and confidence. For all of the positive reinforcement once receives, they might also notice some negativity or odd reactions from those they are close to. Read on for tips and insights from leading experts that will offer clarity and solutions for anyone seeking to transform or who already has.

1. You shed friends along with pounds.
Dr. Sanam Hafeez PsyD a NYC based licensed neuropsychologist, a teaching faculty member at the prestigious Columbia University Teacher’s College, explains that, “It is normal to lose friends as you lose pounds. As you see the payoff from the lifestyle changes you’ve made you may feel disconnected with friends who may still eat and drink things you no longer do. You’re evolving,” offers Dr. Hafeez. She also adds that, “It’s common to notice jealousy, and digs. You may even experience exclusion from dinners out presuming you wouldn’t want to indulge.”

Have faith that your true friends will love you at any size. “It will actually be difficult to tolerate any gossip, negativity or activities that are counterproductive. The last thing you need are people who bring you down when you are doing something positive for your well being. Look out for yourself. At times that may mean distancing from certain people,” advises Dr. Hafeez.

2. Loose skin becomes the new thing you notice. Once you reach your goal weight, you may love how you look in clothes but naked in or a bathing suit is a whole other story. This is most common when weight loss is significant. Even when weight training is part of the regimen, loose skin does happen.

Dr. John Zannis a board certified plastic surgeon based in New Bern, North Carolina frequently sees and treats patients who went through a weight loss transformation. According to Dr. Zannis, “Loose skin can gather at the stomach, under arms, breasts, buttocks, inner thighs, face and neck. The more significant the weight-loss is, say 50 pounds and above, the more likely a plastic surgeon is sought out to explore body lifts that specifically address loose skin after weight-loss.”

3. You have more energy, are excited about life and can do more!
As you change your diet, add daily exercise to your new lifestyle and see the weight melt off, you gain energy! You don’t feel the need to hit the snooze button anymore. You may wake up energized for that 7am powerwalk or you may be inspired by that beautiful new dress you get to wear to work, another dress size dropped. Yay!

“Use newfound energy to your advantage, encourages Dr. Hafeez, your brain is forming new neuropathways as your perception about your body starts to change. That flight of stairs that was once an obstacle is much easier. Simple things like putting on shoes, picking up toys and pushing a vacuum are done with ease. As you take notice of what your body can do, you gain more confidence and want to do more. This energizes you both physically and mentally,” she adds.

4. Shopping gets interesting.
It is common to get overwhelmed with options now that you can shop the way you always dreamed of.  Perhaps your new strong, shapely legs have inspired you to wear dresses again for the first time in years. Or after always covering your arms, you may opt for sleeveless tops. Either way, trying new looks outside of your comfort zone can be daunting. Dr. Hafeez advises to, shop on your own or with someone you really trust. “It is important that shopping is made to be fun by approaching it as a style experiment. Don’t expect everything to look perfect just because you are a much smaller size. Some things will work, others won’t. Look for clothes that feel good. When you smile in the mirror that’s a sign you’re on track.”

5. You make yourself, your health and well being top priority and start to inspire others.
When you lose a noticeable amount of weight other people want to know how you did it and how you are keeping the weight off. Your immediate family may also adapt to your dietary changes and experience weight loss by association. When your kids see you wake up every morning to exercise they see that anything worth having requires commitment. Your significant other may be inspired to also lose weight. “When you take care of yourself and are in a positive mindset, it has a positive impact on everyone you interact with. When the mind and body are aligned you love the way you look and feel, you’re happy and someone others can look up to.”

Have you tried SENNA brow pencils yet?

Hi ya Gorgeous!

Going forward into Fall the brow trend is either a straight caterpillar looking brow or a serious arch on the outside corner of the eye.

Meet SENNA Cosmetics, brow and makeup experts who are celebrating 40 years in the beauty business! Eugenia Weston designed the perfect evolution of a b row pencil and powder in one.  About $22 at Rite Aid or http://www.sennacosmetics.com

I just received samples in their brow pencil that is part powder and part solid creme with a styling spoolie on the end.
From left to right the shades are:  Dark Brown, Taupe Brown, Medium Brown and Light Blonde.

These pencils are easy to sharpen, make a decent sized hair like stroke in the brow and had some staying power when I tested it.

I don't have any makeup on, just styling the brow with the SENNA Cosmetics pencil. First I do the nose bridge to the arch.

Second I fill in the very sparse tail of the eye brow. I'm telling you, I'm "this" close to getting my brows microbladed!

I'm loving the color choices of SENNA Cosmetics eye brow pencils and thinking of trying some of their other products. I find it hard to believe that they have been around for 40 years and in my decades of doing makeup I have not used the products before!

Go get some!

Beauty Brands Master Class in Arizona: what happened!

Hi ya Gorgeous!

Oh what  a fast and furious trip to the Phoenix area I did last week! Literally, down and back in 30 hours while squeezing in promo videos for my film, a master class at Beauty Brands and the grand opening party for ENVY Residences and then an amazing lunch at Kabuki on my way out of town.

Phew! And I wonder why I have grey hair? The Beauty Brands at San Tan Village in Gilbert is a huge store with a salon built in, and it's across the way from Grimaldi's pizza! Next trip to that area I have to eat some Grimaldi's! It's the best!

The class started about 30 minutes late and so I did not get to see the other 2 demonstrations. I did get to see Beauty Brands master stylist Carol A Smith do a tutorial on the popular Fall hair trend, the top knot.

There were light refreshments of the important kind: cupcakes and wine! Can you say happy?

This video is a recap and shows Carol Smith doing the top knot style on Stesha Johnson using Living Proof products. Enjoy!

How to wear the popular top knot hairstyle

Hi ya Gorgeous!

It's finally below 100 degrees in Arizona and my fingers are crossed for a fast track to winter weather and boot season!

With the arrival of the chilly weather, we can now look forward to some of our favorite trends like dark nail polish, warm boots and chic top knots! We all have those days when we want to just throw our hair up in a knot and get out the door! Here are some great tips to keep your knotted bun to last on a cold and windy winter day.

Ultimate Top Knot
·         Want a quick, on-trend look in minutes? Take a brush and comb out any tangles, following up with a tight pony right at the top of your head.
·         Then, grab pony tail and twist tightly. Wrap around until hair is in a bun shape and tuck in ends into your hair tie.
·         Polish your knot with LA Looks Mega Mega Hold gel to keep hair in place. Also apply some product to any flyaway around your top knot.
o   Helps mold hair and offers long-lasting shape and definition with an ultimate hold and flexible control
o   SRP: $2.99

Sleek Low Knot
·         Off to a business meeting and want to look chic and sharp? Pull hair into a tight low side pony. Wrap hair around the hair tie and tuck in any loose pieces.
·         Add in shine and hold with LA Looks Define & Shine  and help smooth and tame your hair!
o    Formulated with humidity resistant resins that help smooth hair
o   SRP: $2.99

Macadamia Professional International Creative Director, Giannandrea, Styles Emmy Rossum for Emmy’s

Hi ya Gorgeous!
So the hub  bub and hullabaloo of last weekend's Emmy's broadcast is over and the trophy winner's are most likely still basking in the golden glow! Congrats to the winners!

I traveled most of the week and am just now getting a follow up style post to the event. This hair look on Emmy Rossum is wavy perfect for Fall hair trends. Love!
Below you will find all the details on how the look was achieved with Macadamia Professional products!

Hair How To: Emmy Rossum’s Glamorous Waves
Hairstylist: Giannandrea, International Creative Director for Macadamia Professional

1.)     Starting with wet hair, apply a palm-sized amount of Macadamia Professional Foaming Volumizer ($25; MacadamiaHair.com) from roots to ends.
2.)     Rough dry hair with head upside down to create extra volume.
3.)     When hair is 90% dry, apply a small amount of Macadamia Professional Blow Dry Lotion ($19.95; Ulta.com) to large sections and dry hair using a medium-sized round brush. Once dry, pin each section with a clip to hold the volume.
4.)     When all sections are dry, unpin and lightly brush the hair. Create a deep side part.
5.)     Wrap medium sections around a 1” curling iron. When all the hair is curled, spray Macadamia Professional Flex Hold Shaping Hairspray ($19.95; Ulta.com) to set the style. Lightly brush hair to slightly loosen the waves.
6.)     Take a dime-size amount of Macadamia Professional Nourishing Moisture Oil Treatment ($39.95; Ulta.com) and lightly run through the lengths of hair to increase shine and smooth frizz.

Fall Lipstick Trends You Can Wear Now

 Hi ya Gorgeous!

Here in Arizona the weather is changing. It is the tiniest bit but just enough to let me know that Fall is on it's way here. True, in the rest of the country, the official beginning of the season change was yesterday, though for the desert, it's s till going to be some time before Han Solo uniform days are here!

What's that you say? It's my fave cool weather outfit: tall boots, skinny jeans, some sort of shirt and one of my vests - just pick one!

Today's post has some lip trends you will see in this season: either the super dark berry red black a la Vamp circa Chanel 1994 or a peach nude in a semi matte finish.

TIFF hair you can wear with Nexxus, Reese and Lona Vigi

 Hi ya Gorgeous!
It has been quite some time since I have been to the Toronto Film Festival in person to see the films. I recall really enjoying the beauty of the city and people.

Today I have a style "how to" for you to help get your hair in red carpet style!
###

Nexxus New York Salon Care Celebrity Stylist Lona Vigi crafted this award-winning actress’s beautiful voluminous hair look as she graced the red carpet for the premiere of her new animated movie “Sing,” at the Toronto International Film Festival yesterday. “Since it was a kids movie premiere that was during the day, Reese and I decided to keep her hair down, flowy and fun for the occasion, and to flawlessly complement her off-the-shoulder dress” said Lona.

Follow Lona’s tips to re-create this look:
  1. Starting with towel-dried hair, apply a palm sized amount of Nexxus New York Salon Care Mousse Plus Volumizing Foam from roots to ends to weightless support the style and add volume.
  2. Create a deep side part, then divide hair into sections and blow dry using a medium-sized round brush to add body.
  3. Once dried, use a double barrel iron to add curls and alternate with a 1.5” curling iron every couple of curls to create effortless, undone waves.
  4. Finish with the Nexxus New York Salon Care Comb Thru Finishing Mist and spray all over hair to provide natural, movable hold.
Products Used:
  • Nexxus New York Salon Care Mousse Plus Volumizing Foam
  • Nexxus New York Salon Care Comb Thru Finishing Mist

Tips for Doing a Self Examination to Help Keep Skin Cancer in Check

Hi ya Gorgeous!

I've got an important guest post for you today to help you with self checking for skin cancer!

September is National Skin Cancer Awareness Month, making it a great time for people to hone their self examination skills. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, one in every five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, adding to the 5.4 million new cases that are diagnosed each year in the country. Being diligent about skin cancer all year long is the best way to beat the odds and keep risks of getting it lower.
“The American Academy of Dermatology reports that skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the country,” explains Katherine Goldman, celebrity esthetician/waxologist and owner of the Stript Wax Bar.

“The good news is that there are plenty of things we can do to help minimize the risks of getting it.”
Skin cancer is when the cells in the skin have been damaged by tanning beds or the sun. Those damaged cells begin to quickly multiply out of control and they form a tumor. Doing routine self examinations is the best way to catch possible skin cancer sites early so they can be treated. To conduct a self examination, keep these tips in mind:
  • Twice a year, conduct a self examination of the entire body.
  • While examining the entire body, look for moles, birthmarks, beauty marks or any brown marks.
  • Once you have identified those particular marks, pay attention to whether or not they change in color, size, and texture. Look for any spots that are irregularly shaped or that are larger than the size of a pencil eraser.
  • Also, look for skin growths that appear brown, black, translucent, pearly, or multicolored, as well as those that may be sore, hurt, itch, bleed, or scab.
  • If you find spots that meet the criteria and are concerning, be sure to have them check out by a doctor.
“Along with regular examinations, it’s important to protect the skin from the start,” added Goldman. “We need to take measures from the start to help keep our skin safe from the sun and to choose safer tanning options. Our spray tanning is very popular, looks great, and helps people avoid the UV light risks.”
Skin cancer is caused by exposure to ultraviolet light, which is a known carcinogen. There are 419,000 cases of skin cancer each year that are linked to indoor tanning. Despite the information available about the dangers of tanning beds, many people are still putting themselves at risk. Spray tans are a healthier way to have a tan, because they allow people to avoid tanning by being in the sunlight or using tanning beds.  People can still have the same bronzed and beautiful look, without all of the health risks of going to a tanning bed. Plus, it’s estimated that 90 percent of skin aging is caused by sun exposure, so people can protect their skin from cancer and from aging at the same time when they opt for a spray tan, rather than tanning in the sun or a tanning bed.

NYFW Backstage Beauty: TRESemmé at Marissa Webb SS'17

Hi ya Gorgeous,
Now that all of the hullaballoo and shin digs of the New York Fashion Week are over, and I have had time to sift and sort through the many emails sharing the looks and styles, especially those that can go from runway to everyday!

I like this look from TRESemme and I like that they are an affordable brand, that's easy to access and is fairly effective!

Enjoy the round up! How about you? Did you see anything from NYFW that caught your eye for better or worse? Let me know in the comments!
###

Counterbalance was the inspiration behind Marissa Webb’s Spring/Summer 2017 Collection. It’s ornate without being fussy; there's an edge to it but still something that can be pulled off with ease. This concept translates into the hair, makeup, and nail looks this season. TRESemmé Stylist Jeanie Syfu was inspired to create two hair looks that are all about making an impression while still feeling like something you can do yourself. “The overall collection embodies an urban modern girl, with a laid back feel- it’s all about achievable drama,” said Marissa.

Today, remember, the 11th of September 2001

Hi ya Gorgeous,
Today, 15 years ago, islamic terrorists hijacked jet liners and flew them into the World Trade Center in New York City, and then another plane was flown into the Pentagon.

Many died. Many families were broken when a loved one died. Many got sick from the fallout dust.
Many across the nation were broken in spirit and heart at the violent attack.

Please know, that Makeup University stands in prayer and support of the United States of America and all those affected by the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001.

How a drugstore brand skincare can get you celebrity photo worthy skin: meet RoC

Hi ya Gorgeous!
Happy Caturday! How is your weekend going so far? Mine is topsy turvy, busy, the weather is hot and holy smokes, are there ever more than my fare share of poison tipped goat head stickers in my yard due to all of the rain!

On ward we go, today's post is to introduce you to the RoC Deep Wrinkle serum and companion eye creme.

I've been using my sample for a few days and I love how "active" it feels on my skin. I do have a favorite brand that is my normal every day skincare, though if anything ever happened to it and I needed to switch to something just as good, I think I would switch to RoC!

Here's the details:
RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Serum

$22.99 retail and available on Amazon, Walgreen's, CVS and Walmart.
This light-weight RoC®RETINOL formula helps to improve the appearance of fine lines and deep wrinkles. After four weeks, skin appears more radiant, fine lines are smoothed and skin firmness is improved. After eight weeks, crow’s feet are visibly reduced and discoloration is diminished. After 12 weeks, deep wrinkles are visibly reduced. This formula glides on easily and absorbs quickly, leaving your skin feeling smooth and velvety and is ideal for use under makeup.

RoC Retinol Correxion Eye Cream

 Belli website!

Teratology Screening - A higher prenatal safety standard
For decades, medical science has known that small amounts of skin care ingredients are absorbed into the bloodstream. This natural process explains why so many medications are now prescribed as topical creams or patches. The total absorption of a topical ingredient depends on various factors such as surface area covered, duration of exposure, frequency of reapplication, skin thickness, temperature/humidity levels, etc. During pregnancy, most absorbed chemicals will pass directly into the fetal circulation where they can potentially affect the baby's development.

The average woman puts over 200 ingredients on her skin each day as part of her cleansing and beauty routine, and it is difficult to know which may be harmful to the fetus or at what dose. Due to ethical concerns, few prospective studies of non-medicinal chemicals are done on pregnant women. Instead, researchers look at animal studies and retrospective human studies for indirect clues about their prenatal safety. As a result, there is now a large body of "teratology" (birth defect) research with uncertain implications for pregnant women and their growing babies.
The FDA states that a cosmetic manufacturer must ensure the safety of their own products but they do not offer any specific guidelines. Many skin care companies simply assume that their products are not absorbed and therefore neglect to examine the teratology studies. At Belli, we believe that pregnancy deserves a higher safety standard-one that carefully monitors the published medical literature and errs on the side of caution. We call that standard teratology screening.
Simply stated, teratology screening guards against questionable ingredients during pregnancy.
The teratology screening process begins with a comprehensive search of the published medical literature to see if an ingredient has ever been linked to a birth defect, miscarriage, or other harmful effect during pregnancy. Searches are repeated on an ongoing basis to capture all the latest information. A list of the databases and reference books used includes:
MEDLINE is the premiere biomedical database produced by the National Library of Medicine and contains over 16 million articles from 5000 international biomedical journals, from 1950 to the present.
TOXLINE is a comprehensive database produced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine and contains more than two million records that cover adverse drug reactions, carcinogenesis, drug evaluation, mutagenesis, pollution, pesticides, herbicides, radiation, teratogenesis, and all other aspects of toxicology from pre-1950 to the present.
DART (Developmental and Reproductive Toxicology) is a bibliographic database on the National Library of Medicine's Toxicology Data Network, which covers teratology and other aspects of developmental and reproductive toxicology and contains over 100,000 published references.
TERIS (Teratogen Information System) is a database of chemical agent summaries based on a thorough review of published clinical and experimental literature. Each summary includes a risk assessment derived by consensus of an Advisory Board comprising nationally-recognized authorities in clinical teratology.
LACTMED, part of the National Library of Medicine's Toxicology Data Network (TOXNET), is a database of drugs and other chemicals to which breastfeeding mothers may be exposed. It includes information on the levels of such substances in breast milk and infant blood, and the possible adverse effects in the nursing infant.
REPROTOX is an information system developed by the Reproductive Toxicology Center which contains summaries on the effects of medications, chemicals, infections, and physical agents on pregnancy, reproduction, and development. Catalog of Teratogenic Agents- Eleventh Edition (Shepard, 2004) is a comprehensive reference work that presents information on teratogenic agents, emphasizing human data and covering pharmaceuticals, chemicals, environmental pollutants, food additives, household products, and viruses. Also included are overviews of recent literature on clinical and experimental teratology, including important Japanese literature not easily available to English-language researchers.
Drugs in Pregnancy and Lactation: A Reference Guide to Fetal and Neonatal Risks- Eighth Edition (Briggs et al., 2008) provides practical, reliable information on more than 1,000 drugs that may be used by pregnant and lactating women. The recommendations help readers interpret animal and human pregnancy data to assess potential human risk when there are human data or the human data are limited or not available.
Chemically Induced Birth Defects- Third Edition (Schardein, 2000) addresses over 4100 drugs and chemicals in current use that cause malformations and congenital anomalies in the human fetus-- comprehensively reviewing experimental studies in animals and clinical data on human development, primarily in the organogenesis period.
Once the search process is complete, we then have to decide which screening criteria to use. For example, what if 3 studies show a harmful effect during pregnancy but 5 show no evidence of harm? What if some of the studies were done on humans and others on animals? High versus low doses? Topical versus oral absorption?
