Best Advice We Got from Mom

Our favorite beauty tips from -- yeah, we said it

Ever since we watched our mothers get ready for a night out (and snagged a bit of lipstick and eye shadow when they weren't looking), they've been sharing beauty tricks. From fighting wrinkles to looking gorgeous with or without makeup, we must admit we've learned a lot (see Mom, we were listening!). And even though "a lady never tells," we couldn't resist sharing our favorite gems of advice.

Oh the things mom has taught us! I remember as a young girl sitting in the bathroom watching my mom get ready and put on her makeup. The care and time she took, plus the precision application. It's part of the reason why I am a makeup artist today!

Enjoy the beauty bubble and thank you for registering for the Fresh Start Women's Foundation Makeup 101 class on May 4th! Free childcare included.

What's going on this weekend: beauty and more

TotalBeauty.com
Amazing Celebrity Transformations

How hairstyles, makeup (and surgery?) makeovers have changed stars like Gwen Stefani and up-and-comers like Susan Boyle

Okay, so none of these women were ever ugly, but all of them used hair, makeup and even surgery to go from blah to stunning throughout their careers. Do you like their original look or their new one better?

Where to find a model this weekend: specifically this one!

Get to this seminar at the AZ Tattoo Expo in Mesa!
1. The Arizona Tattoo Expo in Mesa AZ www.aztattooexpo.com or http://www.myspace.com/aztattooexpo
One of the main reasons to be stopping by the show, besides the people watching, artwork, fashion, and mix is to catch this seminar by Noah and his airbrush techniques. http://www.noahfineart.com/
I’m going to cover the pin up contest, the artists, the award ceremonies and in general, just get a feel in pictures and words what’s going on! Oh, and in my opinion, laugh in the face of swine flu and get out to this event! Support your local artists and tattoo shops!

2. Then…The Greek Fest at Tempe Beach Park http://atasteofgreeceaz.com/

Opa! Oy! Ouzo! Oh, do I have a story of being in college and my sorority and a Greek fest. It includes the Greek orthodox priest, his daughter, a carnival and ouzo. But more on that later!
In the meantime, I encourage you to get out to the local events going on. Just wash your hands a lot and cover your mouth if you sneeze. Oh, and don’t share eyeliner or drinking cups.
If you want me to cover your event for a write up in the blog and in Helium, plus provide lots of photos, just email me! I’m flexible in my schedule and have affordable rates!
See you soon this weekend…somewhere at these events!

REMEMBER!!! REGISTER for the Makeup 101 class at Fresh Start Women's Foundation! There are just a few open seats left for this Tuesday's May 4th class. Free child care included. 602-252-8494

Sunscreen is an Arizona staple: choose these!

TotalBeauty.com
The Best and Worst Sunscreens

See which products will prevent your skin from looking lobster-like all summer long

Whether we like it or not, sunscreen is a must for all of us. And according to Heidi Waldorf, M.D. of Waldorf Dermatology & Laser Associates in Nanuet, NY, we need "an SPF of at least a 15 daily." No one wants to spend all summer slathering on sunblock, but with these reader favorites maybe it wont seem like such a chore.

See sunscreens

No. 14: Ole Henriksen Invigorating Night Gel, $45

TotalBeauty.com average member rating: 6*

Why: Readers complain that it "is too orange" and "the brush bristles break off and shed..."

No. 3: Philosophy A Pigment Of Your Imagination SPF 18, $30

TotalBeauty.com average member rating: 5.5*

Why: Readers didn't like the "thick and sticky" formula and hue, which "turns my skin yellowish and made me look like I was sick..."

The Best: No. 14: Dermalogica Super Sensitive Face Block SPF 30, $40.50

TotalBeauty.com average member rating: 9.2*

Why: Readers like that it is SPF 30 and that it is "not greasy, doesn't clog pores or cause breakouts."

In Arizona, wearing sunscreen on your face is a given. Though I encourage you to cover your hands, chest, neck, ears and scalp even if you are going to be in prolonged exsposure.

And an anti-aging secret is to daily put sunscreen on your hands because even with tinted windows, when you put your hands on the wheel, you get sun! So to minimize crepey knuckles and age spots, mix some spf 30 into your regular hand creme and keep it with you or in the car.

Enjoy! And see you on May 4th at the Fresh Start for Women makeup class.

Curly-haired ladies, the search is over. According to TotalBeauty.com editors and users, these products successfully tame, soften and sculpt curls to their finest, Botticelli-esque state. I don't have curly hair, it's wavy. And only along the back of my head up to the ears. It's a wee bit odd. The very crown of my head is straight. Talk about product challenges!
I know that my friends who have very curly hair are always concerned about frizziness and there are some suggestions in the daily beauty bubble to deal with those concerns.

In the meantime, check out www.wehelpwomen.com for registration to the Makeup 101 class I am teaching on May 4th.
If you know of a lady who is in a "transitional' point of her life, please refer her! I love the opportunity to work with women who don't normally have access to a professional makeup artist.
