Summer Book Club Reading: Hard Times Create Strong Men by Stefan Aarnio

Hi ya Gorgeous,
I don't know about your school year, but mine is over! Woo hoo! My son graduated last week and now we are in the blissful time known as "summer vacation". Sort of.

I can agree to a some time off but I can't agree to months of tuning out!  He does have some summer camps coming up and in the meantime between now and the next semester starting, he has  a summer book club reading list. It's full of Lee Child, Eoin Colfer and World War II history books! One a week. That's all I ask.

Now, I just received a sample copy of a book that may be on his reading list in another couple of years. Special thanks to author Stefan Aarnio for sharing a copy of his latest book, "Hard Times Create Strong Men"  - you can get a copy on Amazon.  His first book, Self Made is available there as well.

This book is written for men and as a woman reading it, I found some sideways insight into what might be the perspective of men in situations that women would see differently. Like dating!
I have a guest podcast appearance coming up where we will be talking about this very subject.
In reading the book it reads in a common speech tone and sounds like one guy talking to another. It's definitely not a PC  book and neither is the tone.

What I gathered from reading is a "take charge, take no prisoners, make decisions and stand by them" attitude and less weakness in being in charge of one's own self and life direction.

Topics range from sex, women, family, children, work, money, government, politics and everything that goes with those!

In reading the book, if I were to direct it as a scene in a film, I would definitely start with a father, bringing a journal to a son and asking him to sit down so they can discuss what's inside those hallowed pages.

As I made my way through the sections of the book I can agree with much of what Mister Aarnio is talking about.  That there is a gap in boys becoming men because there is a lack of generational transfer in knowledge, skill, craftsmanship and mentoring. It leaves a young man, to seek out the help he needs to grow into a strong man.

Every chapter has a good take away learning point, though page 484 has my favorite. Mr. Aarnio is talking about how he donated to help rebuild Haiti after the devastating earthquake.  He traveled to the Haiti to see first hand how the relief effort was impacting the local economy. The donation had built a very small no frills concrete building - not exactly what was described when the donation was made. Sometimes, when the West rushes in with aid to help, like the Red Cross, the help does more harm than good. Because of all the hand outs there was nothing for the local villages to do and they soon learned to rely on the free hand out versus grow their own cotton, to make fabric, to sew clothing to sell. Or grow their own food to feed the families and sell!

This book is a good read. It's large but worth the effort. If you are a mom of boys, this is a good book for you to read. If you are a man, this is worth you taking a look at.  Perhaps some of you don't read it cover to cover and instead use it more like a reference manual and go to the sections you need help with in the time of need.

Either way, I liked "Hard Times Create Strong Men" and I think it's relevant to today's culture, our future, and has practical applications that can help a young man change his ways for the better, now!

Dang! Dirtybird Energy - what spring break needs!

Hi ya Gorgeous!

Whoa! So much going on this month - it's March and that means March Madness, St. Patrick's Day, spring break, and the month ends with Passover and Easter!  Holy smokes that's a lot of celebrating!

So, my son's school does not do a spring break and it's a bit of a buzz kill. We like to travel and take wee trips to visit family and friends and this whole 'no spring break" stinks!  The trade off is he only goes to school 4 days a week. So there's that.

Now, I just received some samples from Dirtybird Energy, and these soaps are amazing. I'm so glad I got a chance to experience this brand. It's one of my favorite things about doing Makeup University - I get to meet new products that in normal every day makeup work, I may not meet!  My samples came as a 4 pack with one of each scent and formulation that Dirtybird Energy makes.

This soap is so big. It fits my whole hand. Speaking of whole - this soap is for the whole family but the size is definitely man sized!

The bar is a generous 5.5 ounce size (156 g) and retails on the website for $5.99 each or a multi 4 pack sells for $23.50.

I've already tested the Original formulation and like the lather, rinse and clean but not dry feeling on my skin. My son used the bar and likes the chicken foot imprint as well as the "zingy" feel of the soap formulation.

The black plastic case the soap comes in, is reusable, recyclable and the soap is made in the USA.
So this soap is ready to travel on spring break trips, or be used in the locker room during March Madness games and when the soap is all gone, you can store some LEGO in the black tub.

So why the caffeine and how does it make Dirtybird special?  More on that in a paste of info from their website - on me - I did not notice a big difference. But - I'm exhausted from a super hard hike yesterday, I took a benadryl for a weird itchy scalp thing I have going on, and normally, I mainline espresso.  I don't fault the soap for not making me zippy because there was a lot stacked against it.

Final thoughts from me before I paste in the brand info: I really really like these soaps. I'm a soap fan to begin with, so this product had to really impress me to actually get me to say that I like it and I would buy it. Yup. They can take my money.

I think these are perfect gifts- especially for Mother's day - 'cause Moms are tired. Perfect for graduation day because those kids be needing a boost after the graduation celebrations and because I love hand made, USA, good stuff for the body, and I think Dirtybird Energy is it.

Also, if you turn the black tub over and read the ingredients - there's some humor hidden in there and I think that attention to detail means from the start of the soap making process to the finish, there is attention to what matters in this product. Buy some for you and buy some to give - you won't be disappointed.

Now for some brand info:

Why Caffeine?  When caffeine is applied to your soap it has antioxidant properties that is great for your skin and when absorbed it ENERGIZES your skin and body.  The amount of absorption varies from person to person and shower to shower.  The DIRTYBIRD ENERGY bar of soap is a great way to ENERGIZE before your first cup of coffee.
THE CONTAINER:  The soap isn't the only thing that's special. DIRTYBIRD ENERGY soap comes packaged in our patented reusable container, that snaps shut and allows you to take your soap anywhere; the gym, camping, vacation, anywhere.

About the Original:
Give your body the boost to get up and go with DIRTYBIRD Energy Soap. This supercharged body bar helps to deliver some get-up-and-GO to your morning routine and post-workout scrub-down with a burst of CAFFEINE and Peppermint. Can you eat it? NO! But you can finally enjoy every last minute of your daily shower. Formulated with Jojoba beads, this power-packed soap will effectively scrub and smooth away dry, rough skin, preparing your body to best absorb the stimulating, skin-tightening effects of Caffeine while Palm Oil and Coconut Oil deliver an abundance of rich moisturizers to leave your skin feeling comfortable and soft after every use.

That's why they call it "runway" and I can help you make it work for the hallways

It's extreme, and has a beauty all to itself. It's from the Fall runway fashion shows and I like it.

Can't say that it would really work for my daily life, or for my toddler, but that is why it is called runway.

When you see the clothes, shoes, hair and makeup that comes down the runway at couture fashion shows it is meant for show, for art and for shock value. It makes great photos and heads turn while people talk. That's the point.

Now for taking this runway look and making it work for the hallway ( and when I say hallway I mean your work place or school) it's about using one or two pieces of the look.

This coming week I am teaching morning workshops and one afternoon on how to use this season's monochromatic/gilded makeup to create a fresh Fall face for yourself.

Using makeup to update your look is the simplest and most affordable way to stay current with fashion with out breaking the bank. Adding a lipstick or lipgloss, and a shadow of the latest color story can make an old wardrobe look new again.

Please email for workshop reservations!

Now...for the men: to update your look it's more about facial hair grooming and hair cut and color.
Yes, color. It's more and more acceptable for men of all ages to get highlights, low lights, chunks and all over color mixed into their hair to create a fresh new look. Even for the lawyers and doctors, business men behind desks, adding a tinted gloss over your hair can update and improve your image.

When it comes to facial hair, because it grows back by 5'o'clock, you can create a facial hair look for the weekend, and be back in business clean shave by Monday morning.

Finally, one simple and affordable way to try on a look is to get a sample from Sephora, or...to purchase a lower price point item in the new color scheme to see if it works for you.

I recommend Wet'n'Wild, Rimmel or the online site www.eyeslipsface.com

or, if you are in the Phoenix area, visit the Revlon Outlet store in the West Valley.

See you in the workshop this week!

Peter Thomas Roth Max Anti-shine gel...my secret

I'm on location the next three days...so...the info will be short and sweet!
My secret man makeup is that when getting a guy ready for film or television, especially HDTV broadcasts I don't use very much makeup. Very little in fact!

What I do use a lot of is, Max Anti-shine gel ( Sephora $40) to take the shine off, give a matte appearance, to hold up under hostile lighting situations to a man wearing a three piece suit and most importantly, in the Arizona sun and sweat...last.

It's thin, has great slip, amazing texture, hugs the skin and blends smooth. Yes, it's a wee bitty bottle for $40 ( plus your $4.00 a gallon to drive over and pick it up or you pay shipping...)

though, it is so worth it.

I use it on my brides, my actors, musicians, every one but the dog because her fur holds the shine down just right.

Good luck and more from the frontlines as it comes in...
