Lead in your lipstick

Lipstick contains lead, sip on that.

I caught the news today because my toddler was up at 4:50 a.m. There was one thing of note and that is the fact that lead is in red lipsticks.

I love red and wear it a lot. The brand names that were shown to be carrying high and toxic amount of lead are : L'Oreal tru red, Cover Girl, Dior and Lip Fusion.

An interview with the head of the cosmetics safety board said it was no big deal because there is lead all around us.

Hmmm, I differ in opinion. Putting lead on your lips which goes straight into your mouth only to be swallowed and absorbed into your fatty tissues is a big deal.

Especially if you are a woman and have been pregnant, plan to be pregnant or are currently nursing. (I say women, because you would be surprised how many men are closet lipstick wearers.)

So, here's what to do: we know that the FDA does not regulate cosmetics or skin care. So it's up to you to be the smart momma who is the watchdog on what goes on, in and around yourself and your family.

If you, like me love red lipstick, and lipstick ingredients are not commonly listed on packaging and if they are it's 26 lettered scientific names, just go to organic botanical brands.

My personal favorite is Arbonne International for the best in pure, safe, beneficial skin care and cosmetics. Try colors such as a lipstick called Bravo or a lip plumping lip gloss called Velvet.

Aveda, Burt's Bees and Ecco Bella are other good sources for brands committed to being cruelty free, mineral oil free and botanical in content.

Now, the drawer full of stuff that you have, may need to be sacrificed to the trash can. If you have bright red eye shadows and cheek blushes, these too will contain a level of lead in them. For cheek stains, stay in the botanical brands and you stay in the safety zone.

Good luck and get gorgeous today! Remember: a little lipstick can change a bad mood into a better one in two swipes!
