If you have dry, ashy looking skin that regular lotion just won't soothe: try a mix.
The best mix starts with lotions / cremes that are paraben and petroleum free. Get yourself some Palmer's cocoa butter moisturizing body oil and put 1/3 of a cup into your lotion bottle then shake! Each time you use it you will need to shake it again to mix the oil with the lotion.
This has been helping my dry skin. Which also is rather ashy looking too.
