There are some fees to enter the events but the watching is free.

To kick off the first post in the lifestyle series,
please welcome Brown Bear BBQ.





Owner and BBQ champion Phil Chiaravalle, Jr
is pictured here with his Southern Pride smoker.

He comes to Arizona by way of Kodiak Alaska.

He has been smokin' meats for over 20 years and
everything from traditional ribs, brisket and chicken to mastering the art of fresh caught salmon.









Brown Bear BBQ has a 'rib shack' in Apache Junction at the corner of Ironwood and Baseline-
but you can also get some of the smokey meats
at festivals, events and BBQ championship contests all over Arizona and the country.

In this picture I'm about to help out at the Southern Pride smoker and pull some rib tips out for tasting!







Brown Bear BBQ smokes meat Monday through
Saturday-does catering events and contests, but the real passion is to smoke up some meats for the two favorite charities: East Valley Boys and Girls club and the Wounded Warrior Project.











One of the secrets to the bbq that Phil makes is his award winning spice rub that you can purchase from Anthony's Spices or the Brown Bear BBQ website.

Phil hand makes everything: his spice rub, his sauces, and the meats are all locally sourced.

My favorite sauce is the Ironwood Special-but you must try the Extreme Hot which has a base of African Ghost Peppers. It's hot-and good!





Here's a picture of the rib tip I started with-there are 3 levels to the flavor: the bark, which is the crunchy spice coating.

Which leads to the smoke ring, where the meat starts to turn a deep pink tone and intensify in flavor.
Then the moist, smokey inside!
The flavor is so good-though I still like plenty of hot sauce to sop the meat in.






Then I move onto the ribs-delicious! The menu has breakfast, lunch and dinner on it. Everything is under $10 and the portion is ample to say the least!
Phil cuts his own ribs so there is more meat to the bone than the average bbq place.

After eating, the proof is in the bbq-it's no wonder that this is award winning. What I like best about Brown Bear BBQ is the owner Phil has bootstrapped his passion into a business that serves good food, his fellow countrymen and helps kids and veterans.

In the greater Phoenix Arizona area-it's still the low 70's-so maybe it's not the coldest winter on record, but it's very dry.

I've been cooking in the kitchen again-and what started as a post for the beautiful cocktail apron by
Hen House Linens quickly became
an "I Love Lucy" episode at home.

Shelley Winter's Caesar Salad as found in the Dead Celebrity Cook Book
1 head each romaine, iceberg, Boston lettuce,
2 eggs, at room temperature
1/2 cup red wine vinegar
1/2 cup olive oil
1 (2 ounce) can anchovies in oil
1 tbs dry mustard
1 1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
Juice of 2 lemons
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 tsp fresh ground pepper
1 cup croutons
1/c cup Parmesan cheese


Tear lettuce in to bite sized pieces. Coddle eggs. Crack coddled eggs into blender and add vinegar, oil, anchovies, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, garlic and pepper. Blend until ingredients are emulsified. Pour over lettuce. Add croutons and cheese. Toss and serve.

Happy Monday!
Normally I love a Monday and get more done on a Monday than most of the week! That is until I just finished an 8 day stretch of work at the Scottsdale Barrett Jackson car auction and show.
Whoa-am I ever tired!
During the week of work, I tried many new products and the good news is, each passed the tests while being under extreme duress!

One of the products I tested was this leave in hair conditioner from Infusium 23.

It is Step 3 in the Repair & Renew line from Infusium 23. I used it two ways: 1) I sprayed it into my hair while wet after a shampoo and conditioner, then used a hair dryer to style my hair. Results were a soft and flexible feeling hair both down and up in a ponytail.

2) Part way through a very long day, I sprayed it onto my dry hair to attempt a reviving of wind blown and cold chapped hair, and I didn't notice a huge difference? But I think every little bit of self care helps!

I'm happy with the product, I really like the shampoo in the moisture line from Infusium 23 and I give it a thumbs up-it's worth you time and money.
Best of all-it's easy to get! Any major retailer or drugstore will have some products from the line.
