Shaun White: Winter Olympic hair volume for the Spring!

Learn how to get the cold winter weather to leave your gorgeous looks alone
Winter Beauty Survival Guide
Winter can be your skin and hair's worst nightmare. It dries out your cuticles, frizzes your strands and makes skin flake -- ugh! To the rescue: tips from Winter Olympics Team USA. Here they share their secrets on how to battle cold winter temps and look gorgeous all cold-weather season long.

.If you have been enjoying the Winter Olympics as much as I have then you too have been watching it on television and most likely looking online for recaps. I'm a big snowboard and Shaun White fan! So while I've been watching I have also taken note of what the Olympic athletes skin, hair and even makeup looks like.

Today, let's take a look and see about Shaun White' style:

That is definately the 80's style volume that we are going to be seeing in the Spring 2010 beauty trend! Though I think his is natural and for your volume I recommend foams like Profound Beauty Stylist volume foam and Aveda's Phomallient.  I think he just looks like a picture of health, vitality, vim and vigor!  Surely that is the result of good eating and wearing sunscreen while practicing his snowboarding tricks. Oh the Double McTwist 1260 is definately going down in history.

I don't know what brand sunscreen he uses, though I know I trust the Neutrogena line, La Roche-Posay, Arbonne, and Bullfrog! Remember to apply it to your hands so they age slower.

Below is a wee clip/photo courtesy of the http://www.nbcolympics.com/ website about the gold and how Shaun White won. Enjoy!

Thu Feb 18, 1:37 AM ET.Snowboarding superstar and defending champion Shaun White won the Olympic men's halfpipe gold on Wednesday, dazzling the judges with his tricks - including the gravity-defying Double McTwist 1260

Congratulations to you Shaun!

AVEDA Fashion Week: the new summer pony is a flat bun!

What should you do to make your skin look fab? Take the quiz and find out
Quiz: What Does Your Skin Really Need?
If only we were lucky enough to grow out of our funky adolescent skin rut and have perfect, clear skin forever. But since we live in the real world, take this quiz to figure out what your skin needs right now.

Currently it's Fashion Week in New York and there is much to a  buzzin' about from the recent passing of British designer Alexander McQueen and how is absence affected the London Fashion Week to what Marc Jacobs created with cardboard. Yes, cardboard is to fashion what pushing the envelope of the theatrics of runway fashion are to Marc Jacobs.

Here's a beautiful simple and updated take on the bun/chignon. I like it! Below the photos are the details of how you too can get that look for your self! Enjoy!

HOW TO GET THE LOOK:

1. Prep damp hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion™ Glossing Straightener for added shine and straightness, and blow-dry smooth with a flat brush.

2. Use a comb to create a clean part—either in the center or wherever hair parts naturally. Then pull hair into a loose ponytail at the nape of the neck, allowing hair on either side of the ponytail to cover the ears and rest at chin length. Spray with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray for all-day strong hold.

3. Wrap a 10-inch bungee elastic around the ponytail, criss-crossing it from top to bottom to create a braid-like pattern. Tie securely at the bottom and set with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray.

4. Wrap the braided ponytail into a flat chignon at the back of the head and secure with hair pins.

5. Allow a few loose pieces of hair to fall naturally around the face. The sides should be loose and romantic while the chignon is more tightly secured in place. Finish the look with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray for lightweight hold.

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look.“Jason and I were inspired by Holly Hunter in the beach scene in the film “The Piano,” so we wanted the hair look for this season to reflect that sentiment. It’s very young and innocent, with a clean part and loose hair in front—yet there is an element of sophistication with the braided chignon. The look is soft and romantic.”—Odile Gilbert for Aveda

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?
“This look is easily translatable for day or night, but can be especially romantic for evening. Prep hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion™ Glossing Straightener and blow dry straight. Create a low ponytail, with hair loosely covering the ears. Wrap the ponytail with a bungee elastic or make a simple braid, and pin it up into a flat chignon.”—Odile Gilbert for Aveda

Q: What is the inspiration for your collection? What is the look you are capturing?
“This season, I was inspired by Irving Penn’s photographs—especially the platinum prints. I wanted to reflect Penn’s own personal style in my collection, as well as his body of work.”
– Jason Wu

Q: You have made a real effort to “green” your show this season. How do you feel about this accomplishment?

“In addition to my collection having a somewhat earthy inspiration and theme, keeping the entire enterprise eco-friendly is of the utmost importance to me. By using “green” products backstage and keeping waste to a minimum, the fashion community can do their part to lessen their environmental impact.” – Jason Wu
###
Okay, for us sun bunnies in Arizona, I think this take on the braided/criss crossed elastic flat chignon is going to be an awesome switch up for pool hair. I encourage you, myself, and the rest of the summer pony tail/messy bun wearers to step up our style and try this simple addition to the beauty routine. ;)

Is this product worth it?

TotalBeauty.com
10 Most Controversial Beauty Products

See which skin care, hair, body and makeup goodies TotalBeauty.com readers can't see eye-to-eye on

Normally, readers generally agree if a product is good or bad and why. But sometimes they have extreme opinions on products, or they simply can't agree if a product is worth buying. Here we share the most hotly debated products on TotalBeauty.com.

For me personally, the beauty product not worth purchasing is battery operated, pulsating mascara. There are several different brands out there to buy from $15-$40 and personally, none of them are worth it to me.

Enjoy! I know that in the summer months, with makeup melting off more than staying in place, adding to your stock can be a cost challenge!
But wait! Check out today's beauty bubble for reader tried and true test results of what works and what doesn't.
In my personal opinion: a stain is always a worth investment and Lorac Sheer Wash is a favorite as well as Benefit Cosmetics' Benetint!
I swear by bronzer and my all time favorite is AVEDA cool stick ( very hard to find) in "cool mint". This AVEDA cosmetic product much like Neutrogena Cool Mist sunscreen actually goes on the skin with a cold feeling. It lasts for a bit, but when your skin is hot, it feels great!

If I had to buy any product for the summer, I would spend my money on mascara. Like the L'Oreal dual ended (red and white) lash building mascara. It actually puts a "sock" on your eyelash and then you color over it. Super long fat lashes in an instant!

I'm going to be reviewing a new lash builder and stay tuned for the reader giveaway!

Enjoy your discount makeup goodies and stay tuned for more from the road!
P.S. speaking of the road: in all my traveling, literally every few days a few hundred miles, here is what I do for my daily makeup and cleansing.

1. I use the Kirkland Signature daily facial cleansing cloths because they work excellent and are very affordable at 150 total for $11.36!
2. Tinted moisturizer that I make myself between a pump of Arbonne RE9 anti-aging day lotion and About Face Line Defiance liquid foundation. I pump one of each, mix in my palms and smear it on.
3. A wide swipe of the AVEDA cool stick bronzer over my cheeks, chin, forhead and lips.
4. Mascara...as much as I can get on in the wee amount of time I have.
5. If time allows...I draw on my brows and line my lips.
Ready set go!
