Okay, it is the day after Mother's day and the sugar high should be wearing off by now? I know I over indulged in sweets! A coca cola cake was amazing and my all time favorite of red velvet cake was also served at the mother's day brunch. Phew, thank God for elastic waist band pants!

Now today, I am including a little bit about the Harpo Hook up show, and watch it, and start dreaming but don't wait for Oprah or the cast of SNL, Shaq or Gayle to surprise you with a hook up. Her show is about this " We found him on YouTube…now, we're hooking him up big time! Then, will.i.am changes the lives of four unsuspecting high schoolers. Plus, Shaq's supersized hookup". Now when you are through watching the show, why don't you start praying into it, the thing you are dreaming about and daily take steps toward your goal.

And if your goal is beauty related then I have a gift, or a "hook up" for you. I am giving to one lucky reader who is a bride, a free bridal wedding day of makeup. Consider it your 'hook up' to an amazing day of wedding makeup and a blessing. I look forward to reading your comments and I'll be drawing a winner on May 13th!

Gals, the proms are winding down, and bridal season is still in full gear. I am taking a few bridal clients through the month of May, so if you are in the greater Phoenix area, email me your dates and I'll send the rates!

One of the challenges I get on the day of the wedding while getting a bride ready is she will ask me about her skin: and some "spot" or wrinkle that could have totally been erased and taken care of had she started treating it six weeks ago.

I share this now because if you are an Arizona bride about to get married and have the wedding of your dreams please put the time into your skin while there is still time to get some maintenance work if you need it!

The same goes for your bridal smile! The wedding photos of a bride and groom are going to last and last just like the blue eyeshadow on some bridal eyes in weddings during the 70's. Here's some teeth bleaching and smile whitening tips from an expert, enjoy!

Trying to figure out what is real and what is fantasy in the world of cosmetic dentistry can be a challenge, and Manhattan cosmetic dentist Dr. Michael Entin has answered some of the common misconceptions about the practice of teeth whitening:

True or False? The Truth About Teeth Whitening

All teeth whitening gels are not the same

· TRUE: Not all whitening gels are the same. Even though most of them contain carbamide peroxide ("bleaching agent") they differ in the percentage of it used in a particular gel. Percentages can range from 5% to 45% or even more.

All teeth can be whitened equally

· FALSE: The thicker the enamel layer of the teeth, the better is the whitening result. Most tooth stains are divided into two categories: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic stains are those that are within the chemical structure of the tooth itself – they cannot be bleached. Extrinsic stains are the result of outside staining like coffee, smoking, and red wine. Those stains can be bleached, so ask your dentist what kind of discoloration you have before you start a whitening procedure

I have to get the strongest gel so that my teeth can get whitest

· FALSE: You should consult your dentist for the proper strength of the gel. This should be done to avoid harming the teeth

Whitening toothpastes can bleach teeth

· MAYBE: Whitening toothpastes can bleach the teeth but only to an extent. Dr. Entin recommends that they be used in combination with whitening gel

Veneers, crowns, and tooth colored fillings will be whitened just like my teeth

· FALSE: All of the above are made from porcelain or resin composite and they cannot be bleached

Tooth whitening can have side effects

· TRUE: There can be side effects if the proper instructions are not followed. There is increase in sensitivity, gingival burning, in some cased pulpitis (inflammation of the nerve and pulp inside the tooth). However, all of that can be avoided by consulting a dentist prior to the whitening process and strictly following your dentist's instructions.

Dental insurance will pay for teeth whitening

· FALSE: Most insurance companies do not cover teeth whitening because it is considered to be a cosmetic procedure. Procedures like that are not covered most of the time

Whitening kits given by the dentist are the same as the ones purchased over the counter

· False: Over the counter kits contain a less active bleaching ingredient than the ones provided by the dentist, therefore it takes more time to whiten the teeth with over the counter kits

Once my teeth are whitened, they will stay white forever

· False: On average, tooth whitening can last six months, depending also on lifestyle habits like consumer foods and beverages that can stain the teeth

Spring is in the air and it's wedding time! In Arizona, it's a busy time for weddings because by June it's sweaty hot, July is not even an option, August is an option if you wear medical grade anti-perspirant and need a really cheap deal on hotels and come September it begins to be bridal season again with October and November being busy times for brides and grooms to say "I do"!

There are many wedding shows happening through out the greater Phoenix area right now, and to help you find the right resources visit www.theknot.com and click on the local link. If you need help with your beauty the webiste is full of Q & A's along with forums to help guide you to what you are looking for.

When it comes to beauty and your wedding day, you will want to get the right tools and products- try looking on www.theknot.com partner websites such as www.endlessbeauty.com for more help. Afterall, sometimes a magazine's info can be outdated by time it hits the stands and gets into your wedding planning hands.

Personally, I think the best wedding rule of thumb is to keep it simple, for all those involved. When it comes to your makeup, looking like you with a little more definition and a touch more contouring will photograph well and have a timeless look in your photos.

Good luck and have fun planning your wedding and try the resources! I do bridal makeup workshops and speaking engagements so you never know, I just may see you at a bridal show!

National Day of the Cowgirl: A Celebration of the American West July 25 & 26th

Today, we take a look at the beauty of the American tradition of cowgirls. Coming this weekend in Arizona, is a weekend full of events celebrating life in the West a la cowboys and cowgirls.

I think it will be a great chance to get out into a wee bit cooler weather, experience some history, make some memories and do something different!

Now, beauty wise, let's take a look at cowgirl cosmetics:
The cowgirl has been around in media for quite some time. Dale Evans was our first national beauty queen of cowgirls and a rather well put together one at that! Defined brows and lips, powdered skin and what looks like eyeliner and a set of false lashes.

Remember, mascara has been around for a long time, though the early forms that were cake filled pans with a brush that you had to wet and then brush onto the lashes was messy, and didn't really give a full set of lashes. So, the falsies were applied for most television and movie productions.
I am the biggest Dolly Parton fan around. Read her autobiography, it's laugh out loud funny and a true testimony of what holding onto a dream can do for you! She is a country girl at heart and has worn many incarnations of cowgirl beauty from the dressed down ( as dressed down as Dolly does) to glittering rhinestone and sequined covered, fringe flowing dresses and shirts.

The makeup is always full face coverage with a defined mouth in a rich pigment. I'm thinking that the cowgirl beauty is about moisture and being noticed! Blush tends to be high on the cheek bone and in a kidney bean pattern at this time along with 3-4 eyeshadows and full brows.
By time the Judds came around, country image had a turn around too. Less traditional western wear and big hair ( think Reba 1992) and more current fashion and beauty trend.
Today's country singers such as Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert are current trend setters in fashion and makeup style, just like Dale Evans was back in her day.
To find out more about the Celebration of the American West events call
480-982-3141 or visit these websites:

Gold Canyon, Superstitions Mountains, The Lost Dutchman mines ( yes, it's real and more than stories and folklore), Goldfield and Tortilla Flat ( population 6) will be hosting everything from authentic stage coach rides, Gus the biggest burro in the world, the museums have free admissions, vintage photos, there is too much to write!

Let's hear from you! and..the workshop schedule

Hello and happy Wednesday!
Okay, first things first: I want to hear from you about what you want to learn about? Is it more technique?
Do you need more photos? What products are you most curious about and want real use information on and freebie give aways?
I'm doing a wee bit of overhauling and getting ready for the new season and I want to include what matters to you most.
So write me!

Second, the Makeup University home page has a link for current workshop schedule. I'm still available to do workshops for you at your event, but, I will also be teaching in the mornings here in Mesa. So check it out and see if something meets your needs for beauty coaching!

Finally, yes, the Back to School bonanza is still in the works, and will be coming out shortly, beginning next week. Stay tuned!

In the mean time, how to deal with frizzy humidity hair: try John Frieda's "OVERNIGHT" hair serum with a chamomile base for repair. It's awesome. It's a serum treatment that you put on your hair before bed, no need to braid it, just slather some on, then the next morning wash it off and experience the lovely lushness of your locks!

More tomorrow!

REVLON super discounts...Jean Nate for gosh sakes!

Hello and Happy Monday fellow beauty lovers!

I like how the media is still saying that we are NOT in a recession. Do these people not buy gas or groceries?

So let's focus on the positive: the REVLON makeup warehouse here in the Phoenix area has a huge stock of goodies just for you and discounts that are so far below retail.

The calendar is posted for you to check out the days that have the products on deeper discounts that you want...or head on over for "happy hour" makeup style.

****NEWS FLASH...the REVLON warehouse is having a special discount added on top of the already published specials just for Makeup University readers...stay tuned for it to be posted later in the week. You will need to print that blog page and take it in with you to get the discount.***
One of the things I love best about the discount warehouse is the fragrance selection! They have so many choices in perfume ( remember, I love perfume. I wear it in layers so I have a big cloud of it floating about me, just like Pigpen the Peanuts gang character. Instead of dirt, it's perfume!)
There are some selections, such as Jean Nate...do you remember that commercial from the 70's? Did I just date myself? IF you have classic fragrances that you are looking for, chances are they are here. If you had a discountinued or seasonal product that you loved and is now gone, chances are, it's here!
The REVLON cosmetic warehouse is worth the trip. Pack your car full of friends and head over for the savings and girl time.
Please call ahead with any questions you have, check the schedule for their hours of operation, and remember, no kiddies under 16 on the weekdays!
Enjoy and see you tomorrow with TOKI and a report from my trip to the AVEDA hair modeling.

Makeup for women who don't wear makeup

Perhaps you are a tomboy, don't have time, new mom, you name it; there is a reason for not wearing makeup.

Could it be the time it takes? Perhaps the skill? Is it self esteem?

I'm here to share a few easy steps to do simple makeup, with a few products and just know that the results will make you feel better about yourself, almost instantly.

After all, it's a proven fact that lipstick sales go up during times of tragedy and stress.

Here's the number one secret to makeup: have great skin. How do you get great skin? Wash it. Moisturize it.

If you are really gung ho about taking care of your skin: tone and treat it. Though for the basics and training yourself into a skin routine: start with the two steps of washing with a gentle exfoliating wash and moisturize with a lightweight formula that has sunscreen in it.

Hey! Wait a minute! What's the exfoliating part? I think you may as well put two steps in one. Personally as a skin care and makeup fanatic, I mask and exfoliate constantly.

If it's not routine for you, most likely you won't do this very important step in getting great skin. So let's put two steps in one...find a product you like that is a face wash with a fine grain to it or a soft grit if you will.

Now that you have great skin, let's enhance it. There are many choices of mineral makeup. It comes loose or pressed into a compact. I recommend this because you get a barrier spf in the minerals and you get easy coverage that doesn't require time or skill to apply.

The next step is to follow with a bronzer. Why you say? Because self tanners on the face take strategic time to apply, too much sun can cause irreversible damage and bronzer gives your face face a healthy glow. Again, it doesn't take time or expertise to apply.

Use a large domed brush, swirl it through the bronzer and swirl it on your face. Starting at the top of your forehead, down the nose, over the apples of the cheeks, swish over the chin and hit the center of your neck. Done.

Mascara is the one cosmetic item I would take with me if I was going to be deserted on a desert island.

There are so many brands to choose from. Here's my recommendations: if budget is a concern, the Wet'n'Wild brand PLUMP is good and costs $2.47 at Walmart. If budget doesn't matter, go for the Christian Dior DIOR SHOW, it's $32 at Sephora. No matter which way you go in choosing mascara, it's the one item that will take a personal experience and trying a few brands before you find the one you can't live with out.

Now for the application of it: don't sweat the corners, the bottom lashes or perfect feathery full fringe like lashes.

Simply put the wand at the base of your upper lashes in the center and gently waggle up towards the tip. Just put a little color on your lashes and if you want to go for another coat of mascara and work on blending the corners of the eye. Great.

Finish the entire look with something on your lips. I recommend a sheer spf lip gloss. Something that will have a hint of color and moisture to protect your lips.

Why bother with all this? It's going to take anywhere from 5-10 minutes to do in the morning and now it has to be washed off before bed?

Because you are worth it.

Because your face is the first thing that people look at. Then they notice eyes, smile and what you are wearing and make a judgment about you in 3 seconds.

If it's family, friends, co-workers, clients or strangers on the street: what do you want them to see about you in the first glance?

Makeup can work miracles for making yourself feel better. It gives a lift to the “you” on the inside as well as the outside.

Now go to the cosmetic aisle and play!
