The Secrets to Aging Gracefully

Top New York City Dermatologist Dr. Channing Barnett

Helps Patients Grow More Beautiful as They Age

New York, NY (February 15, 2011) – As skin ages, it can undergo a number of changes, including loss of elasticity, volume reduction, pigment alteration and wrinkling. After a lifetime of abuse from the sun, hormones, pollutants and harsh chemicals, most aging skin could use a little TLC.

According to top New York City Dermatologist Dr. Channing Barnett, “aging skin is inevitable, but it is not something to be afraid of.” Dr. Barnett, who is board certified in dermatology with a specialty in dermatological and cosmetic surgery, notes that, “graceful aging is best accomplished with the least invasive treatments possible.”

Dr. Barnett works with her advanced medical staff to provide unique and personalized treatments that cater to each patient’s skin care needs. “Just as no two people are the same, everyone’s skin ages differently. Understanding my patients’ needs and goals helps me create a customized skin care protocol which addresses all of their problem areas.”

Spider Veins – Reveal Beautiful Legs in Time for Summer

Most commonly found on the legs, spider veins are superficial blood vessels that appear at the skin’s surface as red or blue. Factors such as hormones, pregnancy, genetics, weight gain and extended time standing predispose women to developing spider veins.

· Sclerotherapy: Leg Vein Therapy

Telangiectasia, also known as “spider veins,” causes many women to be paranoid about showing their skin. To treat them, Dr. Barnett recommends sclerotherapy, a simple procedure where solution is injected into spider veins causing them to fade and collapse from view. The number of treatments required depends on the severity of each patient’s condition.

Injectable Makeover – Correct Flaws in Minutes

As we grow older, our skin loses elasticity causing it to develop wrinkle creases. While this process is part of aging, it can also result from sun exposure, frowning, smoking and smiling. Today’s medical advancements provide patients with more options than just a face lift to reduce the signs of aging. According to Dr. Barnett, “one of the most natural-looking ways to enhance lips and fill wrinkles and aging grooves, including those below your eyes, is with injectable facial fillers.”

· Liquid Injectable Silicone: Treats Acne Scarring

Effective and permanent, liquid silicone is an ideal filler as it delivers precise, natural-appearing results. It can be used for lip augmentation, non-surgical rhinoplasty, and aging lines and grooves under the eyes. It is also effective for creases and volume loss in the cheeks, in the nasolabial folds, around the mouth, on the neck, and on the ears and hands. It is additionally and very effectively used for skin conditions with depressions and severe volume loss such as acne scarring or facial lipoatrophy. “When undergoing the treatment, a small needle deposits silicone in micro-droplets at multiple points under the skin to fill in contour defects. The depth of the depressions will determine how many treatments are required for optimal results,” says Dr. Barnett. Silicone can be used alone or in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation procedures such as Botox, laser skin resurfacing, chemical peels or facial surgery, helping to create a rejuvenated, natural-looking, smooth appearance. Again, the results are permanent.

o Liquid Injectable Silicone is also effective in treating the following conditions:

§ Acne scarring and other depressed scars

§ Grooves going from the nose to the mouth corners

§ Fine creases and deeper grooves around the mouth and chin

§ Fine lines and grooves on the neck

§ Hollows and grooves around the eyes

§ Hollows in the temple areas

§ Aging grooves on the hands

§ Corns and calluses of the feet

· Botox: Botox has quickly become the preferred non-invasive treatment to reverse signs of aging. It is most commonly injected into the face and neck muscles to diminish or eliminate dynamic wrinkles and fine lines. In addition to promoting a smoother complexion, Botox is used to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) in areas such as the armpits, hands and feet. On average, treatments take about 15 minutes. There is essentially no downtime. According to Dr. Barnett, the results of a single treatment can last from 4 to 6 months.

Thinning Hair – Not Just a Problem for Men

Most people associate pattern baldness with men, but it is just as common in women. Typically, men lose hair in the front and on the top of the scalp, while women's hair tends to thin more diffusely throughout the scalp.

· Dr. Barnett uses state-of-the-art hair transplantation methods to safely and effectively correct hair loss and create a natural-looking hairline. Hair transplantation is a surgical technique done with local anesthesia that involves moving individual hair follicles from one part of the body (the donor site) to bald or balding parts (the recipient site). It is primarily used to treat male pattern baldness, whereby grafts containing hair follicles that are genetically resistant to balding are transplanted to the bald scalp. While mostly performed on men with male pattern balding, hair transplants can be very effective in women with pattern baldness or other conditions causing scalp hair loss.

Tighten Loose Skin with Laser Technology

Lasers are able to improve skin tone, texture, sun damage, wrinkling and skin laxity. Innovations in the laser technology have led to very personalized treatments with minimized downtime and resulting in refreshed, smooth, clear skin.

· Barnett Dermatology offers several laser skin tightening procedures, mostly on the face and neck. For people with mild to moderate laxity in the mentioned areas, skin tightening via laser can give nice improvements with a series of treatments. “When there is more than moderate laxity, aging and/or sagging, surgery is usually going to give the best results,” says Dr. Barnett. When undergoing laser treatments, Dr. Barnett recommends a series of 4 to 6 treatments spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart to achieve optimal results.

o Gentle Yag: Used for skin tightening, laser hair removal, laser removal of broken blood vessels and small veins.

o Erbium Laser: Used for laser resurfacing procedures such as removing sun damage spots, aging lines, wrinkles, and brown spots

Chemical Peeling

A chemical peel is a chemical solution applied to the skin’s surface to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improve discoloration (pigmentation) of the skin, improve pores and acne, and to reduce or remove sun and age-related spots. Chemical peels can also refresh the skin’s texture and remove the outer dead layers through exfoliation, providing a youthful and rejuvenated glow.

· According to Dr. Barnett, “chemical peeling is an amazing, cost-effective treatment and offers great results.” Barnett Dermatology offers a variety of medical strength peels. During each patient’s consultation, Dr. Barnett helps them decide which peel is best for their skin.

o Glycolic Acid Peels: Used to treat acne, pigmentation (discoloration), pores, fine lines, sun damage. Glycolic peels are most beneficial when done as a series.

o ViPeel: Used to treat pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkling, pores and sun damage. The treatment can be a one-time treatment or as a series.

o Salicylic Acid Peels: Used to treat acne. They are usually done as a series.

o Trichloracetic Acid Peels (“TCA” Peel): Depending on the strength and how long it stays on the skin during the treatment, “TCA” Peels can range from gentle to very aggressive with spectacular results but possibly major downtime in the case of a strong TCA peel. Depending on the strength, they work on pores, fine lines, superficial and/or deep wrinkles, aging grooves, pigmentation, sun damage and pre-cancer lesions (see images below that were a result of a single TCA 35% peel).
